The dog days of summer are almost upon us and ZoeDoggy is prepared to keep cool. Are you? Below you'll find seven simple tips to ensure a happy, healthy summer season for your best friend!
Sweating is one of the ways humans can cool themselves down when things heat up. Did you know that dogs don’t sweat, except slightly through their foot pads? This is why your best friend might not be able to handle the heat as well as you do. Instead of sweating, doggies depend on panting to swap warm air for cool air. Panting cools dogs through evaporation. This means they need to have a lot of water in their system so be sure to hydrate at home with free access to water at all times and don’t leave the house without a water bottle.
Be on the lookout for days when the air temperature is close to body temperature because on days like this cooling by panting is not enough and heatstroke can occur. Learn more about the signs of heatstroke and what you can do if it occurs in this helpful article from our favorite internet newspaper all about dogs, The Dogington Post, HERE.
Remember to use common sense and imagine what it might feel like to wear a fur jacket on a hot summer day.
You can prevent your pup from suffering heatstroke with these Do’s and Don’ts:
Tip #1: DO take walks early in the morning and later in the evening when it’s cooler. It will be easier to breathe and easier on the pads.
Tip #2: DO let your pup stay home to enjoy laying on cool surfaces. Your tiled kitchen floor is perfect, especially midday. You can check out a great cooling bed HERE.
Tip #3: DO scout out shade. Heat not only rises from the ground, it collects there so it can be much hotter within one foot of the pavement than the ambient temperature - as much as 120 degrees Fahrenheit on asphalt. That means if your four-legged friend is small and low to the ground you need to be extra aware!
Tip #4: DO let your dog dig! Your dog may resort to finding his own way to avoid the heat. Dogs in nature dig their dens not out of frustration but to find food, hide, give birth--and to keep cool! If it's possible, locate a shady area where it's okay for your dog to dig.
Tip #5: DON’T leave your pup in the car. Did you know that the temperature in your car can rapidly climb to over 140 degrees Fahrenheit? That kind of solar heating means that leaving fido in the car is risky even on a comfortable day. Plus, a dog may get overexcited in the car due to passersby or panic from claustrophobia, making dehydration more likely.
Tip #6: DON’T take a lunchtime walk and avoid peak heat.
Tip #7: DON’T exercise strenuously. Instead, keep it nice and easy. How about a refreshing swim?! Keep your pup safe in the water with this doggy life preserver hand-picked by Jacklynn!
Walk in style... and comfort!
Collars are great fashion accessories for your tiny pooch but when going for walks always use a harness. The harness allows for a secure fit and the D-ring on the back prevents pulling on the neck which can potentially injure your pup’s delicate trachea. Make a splash wherever you and your pup go with the American River Neon Sport Choke Free Harness
